The Garden of the Gods is situated near the base of Pike’s Peak, the tallest peak in the Southern Rockies. This location offers stunning views of the mountains, plenty of wildlife, and numerous hiking trails. If you’re planning to visit, make sure to bring a camera with enough storage space for all the amazing pictures you’ll capture. As first-time visitors, it can be overwhelming to decide how to make the most of your time at the Garden, so here are a few tips to help you out.
Pre-plan your meals
In the Pikes Peak region, you’ll find a variety of dining options both inside and outside of the Garden. On-site, you can choose between the fancy Garden of the Gods Market or the more basic lunch dishes at the Garden’s Cafe. Another on-site option is the Balanced Rock Cafe at the Garden’s Trading Post. If you prefer off-site dining, there are numerous choices ranging from fast-food chains like Chick-Fil-A to unique eateries like the Caspian Cafe Mediterranean.
Get your info and start early
The Garden of the Gods has a multitude of hiking trails that can be overwhelming without proper planning. It’s important to research the different trail options and choose one that matches your experience level. Check if any special equipment or preparation is required for your chosen trail. Additionally, be sure to check the weather and dress appropriately with the right clothes and shoes. Start your hike early in the day to avoid getting caught in lightning storms that often occur in the afternoon. And don’t forget to bring your own water, as there’s limited water supply in the area.
There is more than one balanced rock
One of the must-have pictures at the Garden of the Gods is with the famous balanced rock. This unique landmark is a red sandstone formation that appears to defy gravity as it balances on a downhill slope. Many visitors take funny pictures with it, making it a popular attraction. However, it’s not the only balanced rock in the area. If you continue hiking along the trails, you’ll discover more balanced rocks that are less crowded.
Give outdoor rock climbing a try
If you’ve always wanted to try outdoor rock climbing and you’re up for a challenge, the Garden of the Gods is the perfect place. The park has designated climbing areas where you can safely test your climbing skills.
