“I remember experiencing a meltdown at home and thinking, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head to rid myself of this character,’” Holland expressed. The show is based on the real-life exploits of Billy Milligan, who was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. Holland described “The Crowded Room” as a narrative that delves into the complexities of the human mind and how individuals cope with trauma.

In the interview, Holland disclosed that he has been sober for one year and four months, attributing part of his journey to working on the series. “Learning about mental health and its impact, and engaging with psychiatrists about Danny and Billy’s challenges, has been incredibly enlightening for me personally,” he stated. Holland aspires that the audience of the show will develop a greater sense of empathy and understanding towards individuals dealing with mental health issues and gain insight into the power of mental health and the resilience it enables us to exhibit.

Starring Holland alongside Amanda Seyfried, Sasha Lane, Will Chase, Lior Raz, Laila Robins, Christopher Abbott, and Henry Eikenberry, “The Crowded Room” explores the story of Billy Milligan, a man with 24 different personalities. The series is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on June 9.

Holland’s open discussion about his personal battles and the impact of the show on his mental well-being sheds light on the challenges actors face when tackling intricate roles. It underscores the significance of mental health awareness and the necessity of support for individuals dealing with mental health challenges. By sharing his experiences, Holland is advocating for individuals to recognize their stress triggers and seek assistance when needed.
