One of the most sought after destinations in Northern Europe is the Swedish capital of Stockholm. Apart from being a beautiful city, it has lots of culture and history to explore. So if you’re planning your next vacation there, it’s pretty safe to assume you’d like to try a museum or two.

There are numerous museums in Stockholm, all documenting pieces of the city’s fascinating history. While museums are a wonderful way to learn about the history of the city, you will probably want to leave some time for other activities as well. (Like shopping, trying local food, and a little more shopping.) There is only so much room over the course of a single vacation, so first-timers should stick to these three must-see museums for a start:

    Vasa Museum

This museum is the most visited museum in Scandinavia. One of its most impressive exhibits is a 17th-century warship that is the best preserved of its kind. After more than three centuries of being underwater, it is now the museum’s pride and joy. Other exhibits will transport you to when the ship was in service and what living on it felt like.

    Skansen museum

This museum is known as the only open-air museum in the world. Through ancient farmsteads and homes, Skansen will show you what it was like living in old-time Stockholm as 18th-century farmers and gentry. Skansen also has a lovely zoo where you can visit seals, lynxes, wolverines, and more.

    Royal Palace

Other than serving as the official home of the Swedish Royal Family, the Stockholm Royal Palace is also the home of no less than five museums. It has more than 600 rooms, and the museums can give you a glimpse into the lives of past kings and queens of this country. Take a look around for historical carriages and costumes and stick around for the ceremony of the daily guard change.
