Some theater projectors struggled to handle the impressive visuals.
The highly anticipated sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar, titled Avatar: The Way of the Water, is currently being showcased worldwide in theaters. While the film hasn’t yet reached blockbuster status, viewers are unanimous in their praise of its breathtaking visuals, surpassing those of its predecessor.
In a surprising turn of events, it seems that the visuals in the movie are so spectacular that some theaters are encountering challenges in fully displaying them. According to a Bloomberg report, numerous cinemas in Japan faced technical issues when trying to project the film. Avatar 2 is designed to be viewed in high frame rate playback, a capability that only the most advanced projectors can support. Consequently, older projectors are struggling to showcase the film in its intended quality. This discrepancy has resulted in projector failures, leading to refunds for patrons and delays in screenings.
Many theaters are opting for lower-quality screenings of the film, with only the high-fidelity 48 FPS displays experiencing difficulties. Several theaters have even reported complete projector crashes while attempting to present the movie in higher fidelity. Although most of these incidents have been reported by moviegoers, the theater chains have refrained from offering comments on the situation.
